Portuguese grey marble (often marketed as Ruivina) is quarried in the Alentejo triangle between Estremoz, Vila Viçosa, Borba and Bencatel—the heartland of marble portugal.

This historic zone, inhabited since pre-history and shaped by Roman, Visigoth and Moorish periods, concentrates quarries and workshops with short haul distances, which helps cost, consistency and lead times.

Alongside grey, the area yields white, cream and pink marbles that can be paired within one project for tone control.

Grey marble from the Estremoz–Vila Viçosa–Borba belt appears in light-to-dark tones with white elements and expressive veining. As quarries advanced deeper, some traditionally white benches showed darker veins; market demand shifted, but Portuguese grey marble remained a strong selection for designers seeking a balanced, contemporary aesthetic.

Today, Portuguese grey marble is a reference material globally—valued for its quality, palette and versatility. Portugal is a major exporter of marble, and grey selections continue to see steady extraction with growing international demand.

Where Grey Marble Excels

  • Interiors

floors, wall panels, bathrooms (vanities, shower surrounds); pair with white marbles for contrast or use solo for a monolithic scheme.
  • Exteriors

cladding is feasible—commonly with honed or sandblasted finishes; plan fixings and movement joints per project.
Finishes
  • Polished — maximizes shine and contrast; every vein pops.
  • Light Sandblasted — softens contrast and lightens the perceived tone with a gentle texture.
  • Honed (matte) — refined, low-gloss surface that’s forgiving in daily use.
  • Brushed/Leathered — tactile feel; great for walling and lower-gloss floors.
